Or, decoction of Rice, or Barley, or toasted Oaten-Bread. If the Pain is very severe, stupe [cover] the Belly with Flannels dipt in Spirits and Water. The third Day after the Cure, take ten or fifteen Grains of Rhubarb.
— John Wesley, Primitive Physic, 1785, 39.

I am told that a great many persons affected with cholera apply to the steam doctors. Many of these are no doubt cured; but others must be lost, who under a different method might have been saved. I have often said to my friends, that some parts of the Thompsonian practice would be well adapted to cholera, especially in its advanced stages; but it is a fatal error to suppose that this method is proper in all cases.
— John C. Gunn, Gunn's Domestic Medicine or Poor Man's Friend, 13th edition, 1839, 756–7

[For cholera] Should the head be affected and the face flushed, cold lotions should be applied and leeches to the temples.
Scientific American 30/12/1848, 115

[Cholera mixture] Take of tincture of opium 1 drm., liquor ammonia 1/2 drm., tincture of the oil of peppermint 1/2 drm., ether 25 drops, tincture of camphor 1 drm., tincture of capsicum, 1 drachm; mix, cork and shake. In real cholera give this all immediately; if the patient throws it up, repeat at once. This is an excellent prescription in extreme cases when the patient is cramped.
— Daniel Young, Young's Demonstrative Translation Of Scientific Secrets, Toronto 1861.

Cholera is nothing more than exaggerated diarrhea … eat nothing but common rice, parched like coffee, and then boiled, and taken with a little salt and butter. Drink little or no liquid of any kind. Bits of ice may be eaten and swallowed at will. Every step taken in diarrhea, every spoonful of liquid, only aggravates the disease.
Scientific American 14 August 1869, 107.
